New Standard for Australian Yoga Schools

Yoga 200-Hour Standards Yoga 250-Hour Standards As of January 2017, to improve the quality of Yoga Training Programs in Australia, Yoga Alliance-International has made the decision to change its Standards. The changes specifically affect the RYS-200 hour Standard which has been replaced with RYS-250 hour.

*International Schools can apply for RYS-200 hour or convert from Yoga Alliance U.S or a similar recognised organisation. *The RYT-200 designation will remain in place.

The new Standards are intended to encourage Training Providers to develop their own unique curriculum of study.

Before applying to register your training programme as a RYS 250 hour, you may carefully want to consider the following points:

  1. Teacher Training delivery options (intensive, long-term or weekend training).

  2. Learning modes (some theory components can be delivered online or correspondence format).

The new “Spirit of Yoga Standards” for a 250 hour training programme MUST incorporate the Yoga Alliance’s educational categories of study and practice below for a minimum number of designated hour in the presence of a  Senior or ERYT.

*Australian providers that convert registration from Yoga Alliance U.S or a similar recognised organisation MUST incorporate additional 50 hours into their existing YTT.

  • Techniques,Training and Practice: 130 hours.

  • Teaching Methodology: 35 hours.

  • Anatomy and Physiology: 30 hours.

  • Yoga History/Philosophy/Lifestyle: 10 hours.

  • Yoga Teacher Ethics: 10 hours.

  • Asana Risk Assessment: Evaluating the potential risks that may be involved in performing or teaching asana: 10 hours.

  • Sanskrit: Asana Nomenclature.

  • Students Teaching: Sequencing and Leading Classes.

  • Observation/Assisting.

  • Text Books: Bhagavad Gita/Yoga Sutras of Patanjali/Gheranda Samhita.

  • The business of Yoga - Running and Marketing Studio.

Within all Training Courses the following criteria must be met:

  1. As a rule 90% of the Teacher Training total hours MUST be contact hours;

  2. Senior/ERYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher) MUST teach a minimum of 80% of the course contact hours.

  3. The remaining contact hours that do not require the presence of a Senior or ERYT may be distributed according to the school’s chosen emphasis.

  4. All accepted students MUST have at least one year of documented yoga practice.

  5. Schools MUST have their syllabus clearly on their website.

  6. All Schools are encouraged to offer post/pre-course mentoring and further training for its graduates.

  7. As a guide the following contact hours MUST be met:

250 hour course
Total number of hours – 250
Contact hours – 225 (minimum)
