The term yoga can be derived from either of two roots, in Sanskrit: “yujir” yoga (to yoke) or “yuj samādhau” (to concentrate). Despite more than a century of research, we still don’t know much about the earliest beginnings of Yoga many Western scholars thought that Yoga originated much later, maybe around 500 B.C.
Hatha yoga is a system of yoga introduced by Yogi Swatmarama a 15th and 16th century yogic sage in India. He is best known for compiling the Hatha Yoga Pradipika which introduced the system of Hatha Yoga.
Hatha yoga focuses on purification of the body as a path that leads to purification of the mind. The word "Hatha" comes from the Sanskrit "ha" or sun, and "tha" meaning moon.
